2006 Annual Report Online Users Round Table

At the 2006 Annual Conference in Hilton Head, the Online Users Round Table sponsored a program titled “The Web Library: Getting the Most from Google, PASCAL and DISCUS.” More than 55 people attended the session.

The program unfolded as follows:

  • Priscilla Munson, Round Table Chair, described the Google Book Search project, discussed how books are processed for inclusion at the Stanford University Library, and demonstrated finding the full text of a book online. She also showed how to locate the book in a library.
  • Gordon Cochrane, Round Table Vice Chair, informed the group that getting a library’s holdings into Google Book Search requires a subscription to OCLC’s First Search database. He also demonstrated Google Scholar and the usefulness of a link resolver program in allowing patrons to see the library’s paid online content.
  • Alisa Whitt, Academic Resources Coordinator for PASCAL, spoke about the newly unveiled “PASCAL Delivers” project, which created a union catalog of the holdings of 8 academic libraries in South Carolina and allows for courier-delivered interlibrary loans of books within 2 working days. Alisa demonstrated PASCAL Delivers and indicated that it will expand fully in January 2007.
  • Amy Duernberger, DISCUS Program Director at the South Carolina State Library, presented an update on the newest shared resources funded by DISCUS. Featured was the Literature Resource Center and scientific content for nursing research. She also outlined future DISCUS projects and upcoming changes to the design of the website.

After the program, members of the Round Table met and elected Gordon Cochrane by acclamation to be Chair for 2007. No candidates for other offices were put forward.

The members also voted on a resolution to change the name of the Round Table to Electronic Resources Round Table. The resolution passed unanimously.
