Public Library Section
It is the purpose of the Public Library Section to promote public libraries, to advocate ways to improve library service in South Carolina, to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among public librarians, to complement and supplement continuing education activities, and to support the work of the South Carolina Library Association.
2009 SCLA Annual Conference
PUBLIC LIBRARY SECTION SPONSORED EVENTS:
The Public Library section sponsored two sessions at the 2009 annual conference. The first session on Thurs. Oct. 29th was led by Theo Nelson, Placement Supervisor of the Lexington County Workforce Center. The title was “Helping Seniors, Young Adults and people with disabilities find jobs”. His presentation was about the current challenges facing SC’s diverse workforce. With the help of an assistant he explained how local, government run Workforce Centers are an invaluable tool connecting these people with jobs.
The second session also on Thurs. Oct. 29th was led by Meryle Leonard, Outreach Services Manager of the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County. This session was presented in conjunction with the Youth Services Section. The title was El Dia de Los Niño’s/El Dia De Los Libros Children’s Day/Book Day. Her presentation was about Charlotte’s planning and execution of their annual Dia. She answered attendees’ questions in regards to promotion, connecting with the community, and program ideas.
PUBLIC LIBRARY SECTION SPONSORED WORKSHOPS:
The Public library Section did not have any workshops this year in response to limited travel and training support. However, the section did have a table in the exhibits hall where they sold “Banned Book Buttons”. If you are interested in purchasing these, please contact lpetroff@lex.lib.sc.us.
BUSINESS MEETING:
The Public Library Section held a brief business meeting on Oct. 29th, 2009. The slate of new officers for 2010 was presented and approved. The new officers for the Public Library Section are:
