Carmella Broome, who has been blind since birth and works as a Professional
Counselor in Lexington, is looking forward to sharing the story of her first
book and what its like to be a published author with library groups and book
clubs around SC. Carmella’s Quest: Taking On College Sight Unseen is the
author’s story of her first year at North Greenville College, a small liberal
arts school in upstate SC. Ms. Broome describes her academic stresses and successes,
friendships and romantic relationships, and the challenges of being the only
blind student on campus. Her book is published by Red Letter Press of

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>Carmella is passionate about
libraries and their positive role in communities. “Its about the joy of reading
and learning when you talk about libraries,” she says. “Not economic status,
age, color, or any of that. Libraries are there for anyone with an interest in
reading.”</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>Carmella recently completed the
recording of Carmella’s Quest at the SC State Library for inclusion in its collection
of “talking books” for readers who are blind. “I’ve made use of the Talking
Book Library since I was young,” she says, “I’m thrilled that we’ve been able
to work together so that I could record my own book and make it available to
others who are blind as part of the State Library’s collection of recorded
books.” </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>Carmella looks forward to meeting
library patrons across SC and getting to visit some of the state’s libraries.
“I love talking with other people who enjoy books,” she says. Carmella fits
book promotion in and around her full-time job as a counselor for adolescents,
adults, couples, and families at Crossroads Counseling Center in Lexington SC.
“I stay busy,” she says.”The book is opening doors for a lot of interesting
new opportunities.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>Wherever she goes to talk about
her book and share her love of writing and reading, her Seeing Eye dog, a
yellow Labrador named Maggie, is by her side. “She sleeps through most of my
presentations,” Carmella admits.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><span style='color:black'>Ms. Broome says her book has
“something for everyone.” “I’ve gotten feedback from high school students to
senior citizens,” she says. “The book appeals to a wide audience because its
clean, deals with a lot of universal emotions and experiences, and also
describes my life as someone with very limited vision. That’s something a lot
of people are interested to hear about, but it is just one part of the whole
story.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>
